Respecting an Old House While Updating Its Kitchen

Countertops in Montclair are often going into houses with a lot of history behind them. The township is known for its historic architecture, with six districts on the National Register of Historic Places and 92 individually listed landmarks. Its population grew fastest between the 1870s and the 1920s, rising from 2,853 in 1870 to 42,017 by 1930, so many homes date from that railroad-suburb era. Kitchens in those houses have usually been remodeled at least once, and owners now want an update that looks right for the house.

Choosing a stone that suits the house

In a Victorian or early-1900s home, we talk through the overall look before we talk about brands:

  • Honed marble has a soft, period look and gains a patina with use. It etches from acidic foods, which some owners like as part of the character and others do not.
  • Quartzite gives the veining of marble with better resistance to etching and heat, which makes it a popular middle ground for a busy family kitchen.
  • Quartz in a subtle marble pattern is the low-maintenance choice for owners who want a classic look with no sealing.
  • Soapstone-look or dark granite works well on a perimeter run, paired with a lighter island.
  • Butcher block on an island or baking station adds warmth that suits older wood trim.

Edge profiles and details

A crisp modern square edge can look out of place next to original moldings. In many Montclair kitchens we suggest a small bevel, an ogee or a slightly eased edge. We also think about where the top meets an old window sill, a plaster wall that is not straight or a radiator, and scribe the stone to fit rather than leaving uneven gaps.

Walls and floors that are not square

Houses built more than a century ago settle. Walls lean, floors slope and corners are rarely 90 degrees. That is why we template each kitchen in person instead of working from a tape-measure sketch. The template follows the actual wall line, so the finished stone sits tight against the plaster and the backsplash joint stays even along its length.

Historic districts and the work inside your home

The Mountain District, Marlboro Park, Miller Street and Pine Street historic districts are among those on the National Register in Montclair. Countertop work happens inside the house. If your project also changes windows, adds space or touches anything visible from the street, ask the township which reviews apply before you start. Plumbing changes, such as moving a sink, may need a permit and a licensed plumber.

Families that use the kitchen hard

Census estimates show an average of 2.54 people per household in Montclair. Kitchens here tend to be busy with homework, after-school snacks and weekend cooking. For a family that cooks every day, we often recommend quartzite or quartz on the main working surfaces and keep marble for a baking zone or bar where etching matters less.

Bathrooms in older homes

Original bathrooms in Montclair often have small footprints and pedestal sinks. A custom vanity top in marble or quartz, sized to an antique-style base, can add storage without losing the period feel. We cut faucet holes for widespread or bridge faucets common in traditional bathrooms.

Montclair Questions

Is marble a bad idea in a Montclair family kitchen?

It depends on how you feel about patina. Marble etches when lemon juice, wine or tomato sits on it, and honed finishes hide that better than polished ones. If you want a marble look with less worry, quartzite or marble-pattern quartz are the usual alternatives.

My house is in a historic district. Do I need approval for new countertops?

Countertops are interior work, but rules depend on the property and the scope, and plumbing changes may need a permit. Check with Montclair's township offices for your specific address before work begins, especially if anything visible from outside will change.

Can you fit stone to walls that are out of square?

Yes. We template each kitchen on site and scribe the stone to follow the real wall line, which is standard practice in houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Do you offer edges that look traditional?

We offer several profiles beyond the square edge, including bevels, ogee and rounded edges. Bring a photo of trim or molding in your house and we will help you match the feel.
