Frequently Asked Questions

Countertops Questions

How much should I budget for countertops in Jersey City?

HomeGuide figures run $50-$200 a square foot installed for quartz and $80-$150 for typical granite, so a mid-size kitchen of 30-40 square feet comes to roughly $1,500-$8,000 in quartz. The typical Fixr band for a kitchen install is $1,400-$5,250. Add removal of the old tops, cutouts and plumbing reconnection. Elevator logistics and tight stairs can add labor; your written number comes after we measure.

What is the best countertop for your money?

For most Jersey City condos and rentals, an entry or mid-grade quartz is the best balance: it does not need sealing, hides wear well and costs about the same as mid-grade granite. Level 1 granite is among the lower-cost natural stones. Butcher block and solid surface can cost less again in a small kitchen. We show you the price of two or three options side by side.

How much does a 10 ft countertop cost?

A 10-foot run at a standard depth of about 25 inches is roughly 21 square feet. Multiplied by the HomeGuide quartz range of $50-$200, that works out to about $1,050 to $4,200 before a sink cutout, edge upgrade or removal. Granite and butcher block fall in a similar or lower band depending on grade.

Who has the best prices on countertops?

Price depends on the slab, the fabrication and the install, so compare quotes line by line. Ask whether removal, the sink cutout, faucet holes, edge profile, sealing and plumbing reconnection are included. A low per-square-foot number with those left out often ends up higher. Our quotes list each item separately so you can compare.

Do I need my condo board's approval to replace countertops?

Many Jersey City buildings require notice or approval for any contractor work in a unit, even when the city does not require a permit. Boards often ask for an alteration agreement, a certificate of insurance and a booked service elevator. Check your building's rules first; we plan the job around them.

Will a full slab fit up my brownstone stairs?

Often not in one piece. Narrow stairs and tight landings limit how long a piece can be. We measure the route and, if needed, plan a seam in a spot you approve, usually at a sink or cooktop line or a corner where it is least visible.

How long does countertop replacement take?

Plan on a measure visit, then roughly one to three weeks between template and install while the stone is cut, longer if a slab must be ordered. Many kitchens are set in one working day. Plumbing reconnection and any backsplash work can add time.

Quartz Countertops Questions

Is quartz better than granite?

Neither is better for every kitchen. Quartz is nonporous and needs no sealing, with even color that hides seams; granite is natural stone that handles heat better and has one-of-a-kind patterns. For rentals and busy condo kitchens, many owners prefer quartz for its low upkeep.

What does quartz run per kitchen in Jersey City?

HomeGuide's installed figure is $50-$200 a square foot, which puts a mid-size kitchen in the $1,500-$8,000 band. Angi lists an average total near $4,500. Grade, edge profile, cutouts and building access change the price, and your written quote sets it.

Is it safe to set a hot pot on quartz?

Avoid it. High, direct heat can mark the resin binder, so keep a trivet or board near the range for anything fresh from the burner or oven.

Does quartz need to be sealed?

No. Quartz is nonporous, so it does not need the periodic sealing that granite, marble and quartzite do. A soft cloth with dish soap and warm water handles everyday cleanup.

Can a quartz island be installed in one piece in a high-rise?

Sometimes. It depends on the size of the island and the service elevator. We measure the elevator cab and door, and if a single piece will not fit, we plan a seam with you before fabrication.

Granite Countertops Questions

Is granite still a good choice for a kitchen?

Yes. It handles heat and scratches well and lasts a long time with occasional sealing. Design trends have shifted toward lighter and veined looks, but many granites fit that style, and lower-level granite can cost less than comparable quartz.

When should granite be resealed?

That varies with the slab. Tight-grained dark stones can hold a sealer for years; pale, open-grained ones may want it yearly. A splash of water that soaks in and darkens the surface is the signal.

Can granite crack?

It can crack from a heavy impact, from stress over an unsupported overhang, or if cabinets shift under it. Proper support, level cabinets and careful handling during install prevent most problems.

What is the installed price of granite per square foot?

HomeGuide prices Level 1 at $50-$80, Level 2 at $80-$150 and exotic stone at $150-$250 installed; Fixr's overall granite band is $40-$150. The written quote for your kitchen sets the price.

Kitchen Countertop Replacement Questions

Will my existing cabinets hold new stone?

In most cases, provided the boxes are solid and true. Water damage and sagging are the first things we look for. Cabinets that are failing should be fixed or replaced first, since stone must come off to do it later.

How many days will the sink be out of service?

It depends on scheduling and the material, but we plan the removal and install dates together so the gap is as short as we can make it. You get the expected timeline in writing before work starts.

Is a city permit needed to swap kitchen counters in NJ?

Replacing non-structural items and swapping fixtures without changing the piping is ordinary maintenance under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7. Moving plumbing, adding gas lines or new wiring needs a permit. Your condo board may also have its own approval process, so confirm both before starting.

Is removal of the old countertops included?

Only if it is on the quote. We break tear-out and disposal out separately. Fixr's typical figure is $50-$300 per job and Angi's is $5-$15 a square foot, stone being the costliest.

Bathroom Vanity Tops Questions

Which vanity top material holds up best?

Quartz is a strong all-round choice because it resists stains from toiletries and needs no sealing. Solid surface works well if you want an integral sink with no seam. Marble is beautiful but can etch from acidic products, so it suits owners who accept some aging.

How much does a new vanity top cost?

For a 20-by-36-inch marble top, HomeGuide's installed figure is $200-$750, and solid surface bathroom counters at $250 to $2,300. Quartz and granite land in a similar range depending on size and stone. Sink type and cutouts affect the total.

Can I use a countertop remnant for my vanity?

Often, yes. A single vanity needs only a few square feet, so a remnant can work and may let you use a nicer stone. Availability changes, so we check stock when you are ready.

Do I need to buy my faucet before you cut the top?

It helps. The drilling depends on the faucet pattern: one hole, 4-inch or 8-inch spacing. Having the faucet and sink chosen, or their model numbers, before templating avoids extra holes or a mismatch.

Quartzite & Marble Countertops Questions

Is quartzite the same as quartz?

No. Quartzite comes out of a quarry; quartz is manufactured from ground quartz and resin. Only the quarried one needs a sealer.

Will marble countertops etch?

Yes. Acids such as lemon, vinegar, wine and tomato can etch marble, leaving dull marks even when it is sealed. A honed finish makes etching less visible.

Which costs more, quartzite or marble?

On HomeGuide's installed scale, quartzite starts higher ($65-$150 a square foot) than marble ($40-$150). Calacatta marble and rare quartzites cost much more than Carrara or common white quartzites.

Is there a way to confirm a slab is true quartzite?

True quartzite is very hard and will scratch glass. Some stones sold as quartzite are softer marble. We test a sample for scratch and etch resistance before you commit to a slab.

Butcher Block & Solid Surface Countertops Questions

Is butcher block a good kitchen countertop?

It is, with care. It is warm, repairable and can be cut on if oiled. It needs regular oiling or a sealed finish and should be kept dry around the sink.

How much do butcher block countertops cost?

HomeGuide's installed figure is $50-$150 a square foot depending on the wood, with islands at $500-$3,300. Fixr's range is $40 to $100 per square foot. Walnut and cherry cost more than oak or maple.

Is solid surface cheaper than quartz?

Sometimes a little, but the price bands overlap; Angi's installed range for solid surface is $50-$150 a square foot. It is valued more for seamless joints and integral sinks than for price alone.

Can you put hot pans on solid surface?

It is not recommended. Solid surface can scorch or warp under direct high heat. Use trivets, and keep a stone or heat-safe area near the range if you cook a lot.
